Practice Group Manager

The Practice Group Manager supports one to two Practice Groups, as well as some working groups and departments in managing their business development initiatives and day-to-day operations.  The Manager will have the support of an assigned Practice Group Coordinator and will report to a Director.
Areas of Responsibility:
Financial Analysis, Reporting, Management and Budgeting
  • Reviews and analyzes financial reports provided by the Finance Department, reports regularly to Practice Group leaders on key performance indicators and makes recommendations for appropriate actions to improve group financial performance.
  • Takes primary role in developing and submitting the Practice Group’s revenue and expense budgets for the year and, once approved by the firm, takes responsibility for approving and monitoring operational expenditures.
  • Reviews and monitors aged accounts receivable and unbilled time reports and works with billing partners and Accounting Team to ensure issues are promptly addressed, including those related to client billings, invoices, and collections.
  • Produces ad hoc financial reports for Practice Group leaders, as needed.
Attorney Development, Staffing and Lateral Integration 
  • Monitors new matters, attorney utilization and current/anticipated workload and works closely with Practice Group staffing partner to address staffing issues/ requirements.
  • Provides support on all lateral recruitment activities for the Practice Group.
  • Takes primary role in on-boarding and integration of lateral attorneys in the Practice Group.
  • Oversees PGs in their participation in all new attorney orientation, summer hire program, and 1st year associate programs.
  • Participates in talent development initiatives focused on attorney training, career/skill development and core competencies.  Assists with establishment and coordination of formal and informal attorney development curricula.
  • Works with Practice Group leaders on attorney evaluations and promotion issues.
  • Makes recommendations for Practice Development Advisors and mentors pairings for attorneys in Practice Group.
Day-to-Day Operations
  • Sets agendas for and run Practice Group meetings (Practice Group leaders, steering committees, partners and group-wide).
  • Develops agendas for, oversees and coordinates Practice Group retreats.
  • Oversees maintenance of internal knowledge management system to catalog attorney work product and business development materials.
  • Manages Practice Group specific content on the firm’s intranet.
  • Drives best practices in the Practice Group such as knowledge management for work product, development of checklists and templates improved quality, integration of new attorneys.
  • Works with Practice Group leaders to address various personnel issues.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments within the firm to implement and drive various firm initiatives.


Business Development:

  •  Responsible for Practice Group-specific pitches and proposals.
  • Contributes to the preparation of responses to firm-wide RFPs.
  • Implements firm-wide efforts related to the knowledge management of pitches, proposal and opportunities.
  • Maintains Practice Group matters/experience database.
  • Ensures Practice Group website information and marketing collateral is refreshed, accurate and reflective of Practice Group’s capabilities.
  • Ensures the timely preparation and submission of the Chambers, Law360 and other ranking submissions for the assigned Practice Group(s).
  • Provides support in the development of strategic plans and assist in the execution of business development initiatives to support this plan.
  • Supports opportunities to increase brand awareness, including outward facing activities such as sponsored events, in-house presentations, professional speaking opportunities and articles and other publications.
  • Supports efforts to identify client prospects, and assists in monitoring progress of on-going business development efforts and initiatives for assigned Practice Group(s).
  • Supports attorneys with, and supervises PG Coordinators handling the logistics of, client alerts, blogs, newsletters.
A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
A JD, MBA or other related advanced degree may substitute for required experience.
Experience in the direct supervision of others on a regular basis preferred.  
Direct experience in a law firm or professional services environment in any professional capacity preferred.
