Assistant Director of Business Development

Washington DC or Chicago

Provide strategic and implementation support to firm lawyers for client-expansion and new business development activities for assigned practice areas and/or industry groups. 


In collaboration with the Director of Business Development and Marketing for an assigned group of practices/industries:

Participate in research and analysis related to potential business development opportunities and strategic business planning, including routine and discrete market analyses of geographic markets, practice areas, or industry segments.

Provide sophisticated strategy and support for responses to proposals and other business development efforts that require specialized practice, industry, or geographic expertise.

Manage specific marketing/BD programs and projects identified in the annual practice, industry group and marketing/BD department plans (as assigned).

Manage and draft submissions to publications, Web postings, databases, marketing collateral materials, etc.

Supervise and mentor staff that provides strategic and tactical marketing support to practices, industry groups and key client initiatives.

Track firm competitors, their marketplace positioning, recruiting, initiatives and their performance and other key data and topical developments useful for planning at the practice, industry and client levels.


Provide strategic marketing support to practice group and industry leaders regarding:

Annual planning and budgeting.

Program planning and management.

Results assessment and reporting.

In collaboration with Director of Business Development and Marketing and Business Development Manager(s), develop annual budgets to support designated initiatives outlined in practice and/or industry group business plan(s) or as outlined by leadership.


Support recruiting and integration of lateral lawyers into the firm via: 

Preparation of targeted information for inclusion in lateral recruiting packet.

Integration of lateral lawyers into assigned department(s) and practice(s)/industry groups via preparation of biographies and announcements, distribution of announcements, integration of contacts into firm’s CRM system, collection and integration of experience for and into department and practice/industry materials.

Coordination with Communications team as to internal and external communications relating to lawyer’s arrival.


Collaborate with other Marketing, Business Development & Communications team members to ensure the effective management and integration of all firm research, business development, communications, and related initiatives, including:

PR and media relations materials and outreach.

Web presence and information for posting/databases.

Collateral material development and management.

Conference presence and events.



Proficiency with MS Office suite of offerings.

Familiarity with accepted research techniques and databases typically used for competitive intelligence in a professional services company.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated good judgment, a team-first orientation, meticulous and results driven.

Demonstrated strategic thinking and problem-solving capability.

Proven project management skills.

Demonstrated leadership experience.


Education/Training/Certifications and Minimum Years of Experience Required: 

An undergraduate degree, preferably in a marketing, business, research, or communications-related field, and a secondary degree (e.g., a Masters degree, a Ph.D., an M.B.A., or a J.D.) is preferred.

A minimum of 8 years of demonstrated success in a marketing and/or business development-related position, either in the professional services arena (e.g., law, accounting, or consulting) or in a comparable position(s) in the corporate, trade association, or academic sectors.
